SETS or SETS for
is currently a small one man freelance operation conceived in 2011.
The chief instructor is a qualified higher education vocational teacher (Hämeenlinnan ammattikorkeakoulu) with experience as an English teacher and in higher education having developed and implemented 'blended learning' courses as disparate as Business Continuity Planning (Risk Management) and 'Border Control, Services and New Technologies'. This is supplemented by over 25 years as a self-defence and martial arts instructor.
Security qualifications include an M.Sc. in Security and Risk Management (University of Leicester), a B.A. honours degree in Business Studies with Financial Modelling and certification as a certified protection officer (C.P.O.) with the International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO). The training is complimented by both qualifications and practical work experience in Finland as a security supervisor (järjestyksenvalvoja / portsari in Finnish) and guard (vartija / vahtimestari in Finnish) in the retail sector. He has also been training in the martial arts since 1983 with more than 25 years teaching experience having founded and taught three clubs since 1987. This includes the establishment of his own personal security, conflict intervention and management school and the development of the Assault Awareness and Risk Management (A.A.R.M.) courses designed for the general public.
work experience includes substantial experience in IT software development
project management, which is useful for initiating, managing and leading
projects, process development and general planning in any arena, including
security management and education development projects from
web tools to
usability/user interface and
instructional design. This fundamental project
management knowledge underpins web-based and eLearning specific methodologies
such as ADDIE, including those used in business continuity planning
and security management in general. Whilst not conventional
to do so, some aspects of project management
methodology are almost directly applicable to business continuity planning, security operational skills and mission
planning just as much as they are to web-based training and eLearning
education development programmes.
Teaching, security management
and criminology are by definition, multi-disciplinary
studies. This broad work experience and extensive education and training provide
a useful cross-fertilization of skills and knowledge with many insights that
cannot be gained from expertise in any one discipline alone.
study has both horizontal and vertical dimensions for which, the
ability to link
the various skills and disciplines within a coherent framework guided by consistent
principles and concepts at all levels of application, no matter the context, is an invaluable
skill that enhances non-linear (out of the box) diagnostic, reflective and critical
thinking. The training provides
benefits far beyond the traditional borders of basic physical security
provision, such as staff morale and effectiveness (i.e. savings in operating costs and
labour turnover), customer satisfaction and third party security / public
relations, where customers and other associates or affected persons are
