Digi-Dance Battles and Film Awards

The festival's heart and soul lies in its dance competitions. This year's event saw fierce battles between talented crews, showcasing a captivating array of street dance styles from Show Dances to Break-dancing.  Allstyles competition had performers from Hip Hop, Popping, Locking to Robotics and Break-dancing. The winners were judged based on their creativity, skill, and stage presence, making the competition a nail-biting spectacle for the audience.

Show Dance Battles

Dance Battles

The competitions started with some fast Cypher rounds for all competitors to show something of what they can do. Normally this is quite a random affair in a few big circles where people just jump in when and where they can to get spotted. For the Break Dancers in particular, this involves a bit of tactics and timing in itself so as to get maximum exposure with minimum effort in order to conserve energy for the rest of the tournament.

On this occasion, the size of the stage and risk of falling off the front of it, limited this process to a more civilised queue of performers with each having just 1 minute to gain the judges favour. Festival staff were on hand at the front of the stage to act as a safety net for some of the younger performers, just in case., whilst one of the more experience junior break-dancers managed to use his narrow margin for error to his advantage with some improvised humour. This level of awareness and adaptability is one of the most valuable skills developed by Break-dancers as part of their art.

To reduce the numbers to a manageable size, the Judges then picked out the top performers for the knock-out rounds. Then, the one on one, head to head battles began.

Live and Online: Stage performances and dance film competitions

All the enthralling dance battles were held in a auditorium made for the purpose, captivating the live audience. While captivating the live audience in the purpose-built auditorium, the festival also professionally filmed and streamed the performances online along with other dance films submitted to the film competition section. This global reach allowed viewers worldwide to experience the energy and creativity of Espoo Digi-Dance International.

The event also boasts an excellent Food Bazaar brimming with international cuisine to enjoy in between performances and workshops, or whilst watching a film on the outer screen.
